Judicial Activism in Pakistan; Justifications and Implications

At present, this is judicial activism that is the talk of the town in Pakistan and even a man in the street is ever ready to deliver a speech on the issue using the knowledge acquired through different sources; none of which is generally reliable, though. Invalidating legislative processes, intervening in administration of health and education sectors and questioning and nullifying routine executive decisions are some of the many steps being taken by the superior courts quite frequently nowadays. Certainly, there do exist many factors, like lack of interest and dismal performance of the lawmakers, self-centred and ineffective role of bureaucracy, blatant and frequent denial of fundamental rights, and persistent and extreme absence of basic facilities of life, which provide judiciary sufficient room and justification to depart with its routine functioning to play a direct and authoritative role in legislative and executive domain of the country using the powers granted under the constitution. It is, however, also worth considering that judicial activism carries significant yet diverse implications for almost all the sectors of Pakistan. Where on the one hand, it serves as a tool to ensure accountability, rule of law and improved governance; it weakens the political and administrative sectors, on the other, by denying the spirit of separation of powers and repudiating people’s right to run their affairs through the persons they have elected to represent them. Judicial activism might provide some relief as a palliative medicine, yet it is certainly not the cure of the diseases Pakistan is afflicted with at present.

Higher Education in Pakistan; Challenges and the Way Forward

Problems, issues, deficiencies: this is what today’s Pakistan is brimful of. Wherever looks the eye, nothing is visible but a situation clamouring for an immediate and focussed attention of those at the helm of affairs.

Where the country is confronted with numerous other problems, its higher education system is crippled with numerous deficiencies and lacunas. Succinctly speaking, the inability of the higher education sector to produce persons who are skilled enough to contribute satisfactorily to economic and social development of the country is sufficient to highlight its condition that is appalling beyond an iota of doubt. Certainly, there are multiple factors responsible for the catastrophe that casts the devastating impacts on all the sectors of the society. For the amelioration of the system, a meticulously designed and passionately implemented policy is the most pressing need of the time.

Global Warming; How to Save the Planet

It is good if the food is warm at the dining table, the blanket is warm in chilly winter nights; and feelings are warm for those near and dear to us; yet it is certainly not good if the planet we live in gets warm and keeps on getting warmer with every passing day. In order to serve their economic goals, some countries of the world find it more suitable to negate outright the idea of global warming, and declare it a self-presumed myth; yet ground realities prove that global warming is an awful reality, gazing furiously at the mankind. The overall environment of the world is certainly getting warmer and warmer with the passage of time. If sincere and well-coordinated efforts are not made for the amelioration of the situation, the drastic repercussions that have already started appearing in the form of heavy floods, mighty storms and severe rainfalls, would become uncontrollable.

Gender Equality; A Myth or Reality?

Though it is generally perceived to be so, this is not the case in reality: gender equality is by no means a myth, but a highly achievable task which has already been achieved reasonably in many countries of the world. Gender equality that refers to ensuring equitable provision of economic, social and political opportunities to all human beings without any sort of discrimination on the basis of sex was a part of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a very important goal, and many countries of the world have shown remarkable performance with reference to its achievement. As the goal is still alive being a part of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is not a mere dream that the whole world will achieve it successfully in the times to come. However, some sincere, serious, well-coordinated and wholehearted efforts are required to be made for the purpose by all the stakeholders across the globe.
