“Pakistan’s Toughest Cop” Perished

“I will give my life but I won’t bow to terrorists.”

The lion of Karachi police and Pakistan’s toughest cop, as termed by ‘Reuters’, SSP CID, Chaudhry Aslam at last ran out of luck. This valiant, dutiful officer embraced martyrdom in a powerful bomb blast — the responsibility of which has been claimed by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Mohamand Agency — that sent his vehicle flying into the air in the Essa Nagri area near the Lyari Expressway, Karachi.
Chaudhry Aslam was undoubtedly the most recognizable face of Karachi police. Nobody doubted his bravery. He faced the most feared criminals and militants with total disregard for his own safety. The assault in which he and three other cops lost their lives was the fourth attempt on the life of the martyred SSP. He ignored the safety of his family in the line of duty and refused to slow down even after his house was bombed.

Chaudhry Aslam originally hailed from Manshera in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Due to his courageous role in the Karachi operation, the officer was given the sobriquet of ‘Chaudhry’ by his colleagues and the media thanks to his unorthodox style; rarely ever seen in uniform, Aslam would descend from his vehicle, pistol in one hand, cigarette in the other, evoking the image of a law enforcer from the Wild West. Chaudhry Aslam was one of Karachi’s highest-profile police officials, known for leading daring police raids and gun battles against militants in some of the most dangerous neighbourhoods of Karachi. Scores of suspected criminals and militants were killed or captured on his watch.

The slain officer was for long a marked man, no surprise considering the maverick fashion in which he dealt with criminals and terrorists in Karachi. Though the allegations of staging fake encounters continued to dog him, yet it was clear that Mr Chaudhry went after criminals and terrorists without prejudice, hounding political militants, gangsters and religious extremists with equal fervour. His bravery was widely known as he would accompany his men to shootouts involving suspects and remain unruffled even after an attempt on his life.

“Chaudhry Aslam was a brave officer. We will not let the will of the nation be crushed by these cowardly acts by terrorists.”
Pakistan’s Premier Nawaz Sharif

“TTP dogs martyred my SSP. Shaheed Chaudhry Aslam had been threatened and attacked before. He did not back down. He died as a brave man.”
PPP Patron-in-Chief, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

SSP Chaudhry Aslam was active in fighting against terrorists who are carrying our subversive activities in Pakistan.
Altaf Hussain, MQM Supremo

“We express solidarity with the bereaved families and stand by the people of Karachi whom Chaudhry Aslam and his associates were endeavouring to protect from permanent threat of terrorism, lawlessness and target killing.”
Imran Khan,  PTI Chief
